What do you like best about your major?

The best part of my program is the people I get to work with. The professors in the major are some of the most amazing people I have met. A benefit of having small class sizes is that we really get to know each other. Plus, the professors are all extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Every professor I’ve had has some major accomplishments under their belts. Many of my professors have had books or scholarly articles published.

Have you gotten any experience in the classroom?

The fall semester of my first year I got to help out in a classroom, which is rare for education majors at other schools. I have also interned at Edmunds Middle School in 盛京棋牌, VT. Twice a week, another student and I went into a classroom for one period, helped out with the lesson, and worked one-on-one with students. It was a great opportunity to actually work in a school. We got useful, hands-on practice and learned more about working with students. Since my first year, I have been taking notes, observing professionals, and learning about what I can incorporate into my own classroom.

How has Champlain prepared you for the professional world?

After graduation, I would like to get a job teaching in a high school. Then I plan to begin looking into graduate schools and getting my master’s degree.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve found about Champlain?

The most surprising thing I have found at Champlain is how easy it is to start a new club. When I was a first-year, I began an a capella group called The 盛京棋牌es. After gauging student interest, filling out the required forms, and getting a faculty advisor, I was able to continue my passion for a capella and singing very quickly. You can create a club for anything, really.

Tell us about your internships!

At Capgemini, I was a member of the Learning and Development Team in the Human Resources department. I designed and hosted English Corners, where I presented PowerPoint presentations about various topics that could benefit coworkers. I helped colleagues enrich their English proficiency through these workshops, as well as through small group sessions with executives. I had the opportunity to display and enhance my creativity, communication skills, and leaderships skills through these initiatives.At the Migrant Access Programme, I was an assistant to the various teachers at the non-profit school. I assisted teachers with academic classes and helped students acclimate to Irish culture. I worked with refugees and asylum seekers from Africa, Latin America, and Europe to help them adjust to changes and challenges after immigrating to Ireland. I was able to work with students from unique cultural backgrounds and enhanced my leadership and interpersonal communication skills through group conversations and presentations.At the Salvation Army, I was an intern who mainly worked with teenagers during teen nights. I supervised and engaged teenagers in education and community enrichment programs like talking about bias and diversity. I got the opportunity to work with individuals I might be interested in working with in my future professional career, and was a positive role model to the teens.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in? What do you do/why do you enjoy them?

I perform at The Grind every Tuesday. I either choose to sing, beatbox, or read a piece of literature in an open mic setting. I enjoy how the atmosphere is very welcoming and nonjudgmental. Anyone can perform whatever they wish to perform.. It is great to be able to sing and to listen to the talent of others.

What has been the most surprising thing about Champlain so far?

The most surprising thing about Champlain so far is how understanding the professors are. Because of our school’s size, I expected them to be less distant than they would be at a larger university, but the professors at Champlain really go above and beyond. They treat their students like people, and they’re forgiving when life gets messy. They will stick their necks out for students to succeed.

Have you had the chance to study abroad?

I studied abroad in Tokyo, Japan. It was incredible. The college culture in Japan is so different from college culture in the United States. Even though I was nervous about speaking Japanese, being immersed in the language really helped me develop that skill.

How has Champlain prepared you for your industry?

The Game Production classes have shaped me into a good team member. Being on a ten-person team is much easier said than done, so my communication skills have really grown since coming to college.

How has the Upside-Down Curriculum enhanced your education?

The Upside-Down Curriculum has been extremely beneficial to my learning. I love hands-on experiences, and I started working in my field on day three of being at Champlain College. Not only were hands-on, major-specific experiences available to me as a first-year student, but they also encouraged and pushed for me and my peers to take advantage of and pursue. This attitude towards real-world experience has shifted my own perspective on what higher education specifically should look like, and I’m so grateful to Champlain for opening my eyes to this possibility.

In what ways do you think your internship experience will give you a competitive advantage when it comes to getting a job in your field after graduation?

My internship in the President’s Office [as Student Communications Liaison] is the first of Division of Information Technology & Sciences kind. I came to the administration with my idea, pitched it, researched it, and made sure it was actualized. Working with the administration in this way has given me an in-depth understanding of the complexities of working in higher education, a knowledge base I had not previously accessed. This experience will aid me in future advocacy and communications work, which I will employ everywhere I go.

How has your Champlain experience prepared you for your future career, both in and out of the classroom?

Champlain has made me a better person. Not just a learner or professional, but a person. The qualities I’ve developed inside and outside of the classroom while attending Champlain apply to all aspects of my life and have truly shaped my being. I feel ready to tackle new challenges and immerse myself even more in my field of education.
